Warsh Stuck Between Reaction Function and Secular Spirit at Jackson Hole

At this year's Jackson Hole gathering, Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh faces a delicate balancing act, according to Mohamed El-Erian. The new Fed chair must navigate high expectations and varying sets of expectations from different camps.

One group wants Warsh to outline his near-term 'reaction function' and provide forward guidance on monetary policy, similar to recent Fed chairs.

However, another camp prefers that Warsh return to Jackson Hole's 'original secular spirit' by focusing on longer-term economic and structural forces, such as the impact of AI spending or the U.S.-Iran war.

The challenge is complicated by policy issues outside the Fed's direct mandate, and El-Erian notes that it will be difficult for Warsh to strike a balance between these two approaches without leaving some unsatisfied.
