Warsh Vows to Tame Inflation as Fed Shifts Course
Fed Chair Kevin Warsh has signaled a shift in policy focus towards controlling inflation since taking over for Jerome Powell. At his first appearance before Congress, Warsh emphasized that the 63 months of inflation above target had been an 'unfair burden' on American people and businesses.
In June, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 3.5% year-over-year, down from May's 4.2%, but still above the Fed's 2% target. Warsh has already launched five internal task forces to rethink how the Fed communicates and defines its approach to inflation.
With a wait-and-see approach in his first meeting as chair, the Fed kept its benchmark rate steady at 3.5%-3.75%. This hawkish stance could lead to greater volatility in the bond market and put pressure on growth and tech stocks.
