Warsh vs. Bessent: A Clash of Approaches Inside the US Economy

Fed Chair Kevin Warsh is trying to change the way the market responds to economic data. Instead of spoon-feeding Wall Street clues on what the Fed will do next, he wants the bond market to simply react to actual data releases and other factors.

This approach is part of an experiment on a grand stage, as President Donald Trump's point man on the economy takes a hands-off approach. However, this effort is being hindered by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who intervened in the bond market last week with a plan to double Treasury buybacks.

This move was widely seen as an attempt to drive down uncomfortably high bond rates, long a goal of Bessent's. The 30-year recently climbed to its highest level since 2007, just before the Great Financial Crisis.
