Warsh's Cautious Fed Holds Rates Steady Amid Elevated Inflation
Fed Chair Kevin Warsh has taken a cautious approach to monetary policy since taking over in May, holding interest rates steady at back-to-back meetings. This decision is unusual given elevated inflation and calls for rate hikes.
The inflation rate was 3.5% over the past 12 months as of June, exceeding the Fed's long-term target of 2%. Meanwhile, the labor market remains resilient with unemployment at a low 4.2%, meaning the Fed doesn't need to support it with lower rates.
Warsh has promised a 'regime change' in how the Fed operates and has established five task forces to examine various aspects of its operations, including communication, balance sheet management, and inflation assessment. These task forces are not expected to release their findings until the end of this year.
