Warsh's Communication Shift Sparks Market Volatility Concerns
The US Federal Reserve's decision to keep interest rates unchanged has been attributed to Fed chair Kevin Warsh's shift in communication strategy, which prioritizes market assessment over explicit guidance.
This seismic change is a break from decades of US central bank policy that relied on carefully crafted communication and forward guidance to shape expectations.
'He wants the markets to assess data rather than him signalling,' says James Turp, a fixed income portfolio manager at Ninety One.
The dissenters, ironically, may have got their way: because mortgage rates in the US are linked to longer-term bond yields, when those yields move higher, mortgage rates also rise and consumers feel the impact. 'In other words, financial conditions have tightened even without another Fed rate hike,' says Els.
This shift in communication strategy could lead to more volatility in the market, as investors struggle to decipher the Fed's intentions.
