Warsh's Fed Keeps Interest Rates Unchanged Amid Inflation Concerns
With Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh at the helm since March, interest rates have remained unchanged. The current rate is above the Fed's target of 2%, which has led to calls for a hike.
The latest Consumer Price Index (CPI-U) data shows inflation cooled from June to July but remains at 3.5% year-over-year. This is still above the Fed's target, and some argue it warrants an interest rate increase.
However, the job market has become a complicating factor. In July, the U.S. lost 23,000 jobs, which was unexpected. The consensus was that the economy would add between 80,000 and 85,000 jobs, resulting in a deficit of 113,000 to 118,000 jobs compared to expectations.
Warsh has stated that he prefers not to provide forward guidance on interest rates, saying that 'being somewhat more circumspect in our communications' is a better approach. This lack of transparency makes it difficult for investors and economists to predict the Fed's next move.
