Warsh's Forward Guidance Gamble Pays Off for Apollo Economist
Apollo's chief economist Torsten Sløk is backing Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's decision to eliminate forward guidance from the central bank. In a recent blog post, Sløk argued that there are three reasons why this move is beneficial for monetary policy. Firstly, it prevents policy inertia by giving the Fed flexibility to adjust its rate path as new data becomes available.
Secondly, it improves real market signals by allowing prices to adjust in response to changing economic conditions. Thirdly, it stops false certainty by ending predictability and forcing investors not to treat a rate path as a certainty.
Sløk acknowledges that eliminating forward guidance can lead to greater volatility in markets, but argues that this can be minimized by providing clearer framework guidance. He suggests that Warsh could dampen market uncertainty by making it clear how the Fed intends to reach its 2% inflation target.
