Kevin Warsh's speech at Jackson Hole has sparked market expectations of a potential rate hike in September, despite not directly announcing one. The Federal Reserve Chair emphasized that underlying inflation needs to move towards 2% 'clearly and at sufficient speed' for the Fed to consider further action.

The markets have interpreted this as hawkish, with implied chances of a September quarter-point hike jumping from around 35-40% to about 55-60%. The S&P 500 fell 0.25%, the Nasdaq dropped 0.52%, and the Dow slipped 0.02%, while Bitcoin price also pulled back towards $78,000.

Warsh's comments were seen as a rejection of traditional forward guidance, instead focusing on data dependence. He highlighted that summer PCE and CPI readings were better than expected but did not show meaningful improvement in underlying trends.
