Warsh's Hawkish Stance Sends Equities Reeling
Newly appointed Fed Chair Kevin Warsh made his first address from Jackson Hole, Wyoming, on Friday morning. He emphasized that inflation remains an ongoing problem and sees no signs of easing underlying inflationary trends.
Warsh's hawkish stance sent shockwaves through the market, with Treasury yields increasing and equities taking a hit. Tech stocks and small- to mid-cap stocks were particularly affected, losing 3.47%, 1.39%, 1.2%, and 0.84% respectively.
The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index dropped significantly, as did the Russell 2000, S&P Midcap 400, and S&P Smallcap 600. This development is likely to hurt businesses heavily reliant on debt and balance sheet maintenance.
