Warsh's Hawkish Tone Boosts Expectations of September Rate Hike
Financial markets were abuzz after Federal Reserve chair Kevin Warsh's speech at Jackson Hole on August 28. Jessica Jablonowski, a Cayman-based investment advisor, praised Warsh's explanation of his inflation and interest rate thinking as 'his best performance yet.'
However, Warsh's hawkish tone increased expectations that the Fed will raise interest rates in mid-September. This is likely due to consistently high US inflation above the 2% target rate.
Jablonowski attributed the price increases to higher oil prices caused by the Middle East conflict, US tariffs, and massive spending on AI development.
If the Fed raises interest rates by 0.25 percentage points in September, banks in Cayman will follow suit, affecting variable interest rates for loans and mortgages tied to the US prime rate.
