Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh surprised market watchers with his hawkish stance at the Jackson Hole Economic Symposium, boosting expectations for a rate hike in September.

The CME's FedWatch tool shows traders now see a 60.4% chance of a quarter-point hike next month, up from around 56% on Friday.

Warsh emphasized the importance of inflation risks and his commitment to achieving price stability, which Deutsche Bank said was a 'hawkish surprise' in its specificity and lean towards tighter monetary policy.

Nomura noted that near-term data sensitivity is high, with Warsh implying policy may need to react if disinflation isn't occurring quickly enough.

However, Matthew J. Maley of Miller Tabak + Co. expressed skepticism about a rate hike, citing weak labor market data and better-than-expected inflation readings since the last FOMC meeting.
