Warsh's Hawkish Tone Sends USD Soaring as AUD Falters
US Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh has sparked speculation about a potential rate hike in September after delivering a hawkish speech at the Jackson Hole symposium.
Warsh emphasized the importance of returning inflation to the Fed's 2% target and warned that further rate hikes may be necessary if progress stalls. He also stated that financial conditions are not currently restrictive, which could indicate multiple rate hikes ahead.
The comments triggered a significant increase in bond yields, with the largest post-Jackson Hole rise in 20 years. The US dollar gained strength as a result of Warsh's speech, with USD/JPY near a one-week high and trading at 159.68.
AUD/USD was particularly affected, reversing sharply after failing to sustain a break above the 0.7200 resistance level and falling by 0.4%.
