Warsh's Hawkish Tone Sends Wall Street into Caution Mode
Wall Street's main indexes declined on Friday as investors turned cautious following Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's reaffirmation of the central bank's commitment to fighting inflation.
Warsh stated that without confidence in a clear and sufficient decline in inflation to the Fed's 2% goal, there would be 'more work to do.' This sent a hawkish signal, causing traders to increase bets on a September rate hike.
The reiteration of the central bank's focus on inflation did not come as a surprise to investors, with Mark Hackett, chief market strategist for Nationwide, noting that Warsh is 'very adamant' about maintaining the 2% inflation target.
Chip stocks were mixed, with Nvidia and Marvell Technology experiencing losses of 3.9% and 9.9%, respectively, due to doubts over revenue from AI chip agreements.
