US Federal Reserve chief Kevin Warsh sent Wall Street into a downward spiral on August 28, 2026, after delivering a hawkish inflation warning in his highly anticipated speech at the Jackson Hole symposium.

In the address, Warsh emphasized that fighting high inflation is a top priority for the Fed, stating, 'We must be confident that underlying inflation is moving to our objective, clearly and at sufficient speed. Otherwise, we have work to do.'

Warsh's comments sparked a surge in short-term US Treasury bond yields, reflecting investors' expectations of a higher Fed rate, and futures markets raised the odds of a September rate hike.

The dollar also rallied against major currencies as a result of Warsh's speech, while oil prices finished slightly lower due to mixed signals over the prospects for a reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
