Warsh's Inflation Credibility Fades as Bond Investors Grow Worried
Bond investors are growing increasingly worried about a potential Treasury selloff as Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh's credibility in combating inflation appears to be weakening. Warsh has failed to outline a strategy for addressing price pressures, leading investors to demand a larger premium on longer-dated debt.
This has resulted in higher borrowing costs for the government, homeowners, and corporations. The 30-year Treasury yield has climbed to a 19-year peak of nearly $2, reaching as high as it has since 2003.
The Middle East conflict has pushed oil prices up, fueling inflation worries and making it harder for officials to set policy. As the Iran war continues, investors are concerned that elevated inflation expectations could become more firmly rooted.
