Warsh's Jackson Hole Balancing Act: Reaction Function vs Secular Spirit
Mohamed El-Erian, chief economic adviser at Allianz, believes Kevin Warsh's first Jackson Hole speech as Federal Reserve chair will be a balancing act between providing near-term 'reaction function' and focusing on longer-term economic forces.
According to El-Erian, one camp wants Warsh to outline his policy reaction to recent inflation data, which rose 0.2% in July, while another group wants him to return to the gathering's 'original secular spirit' by examining structural forces reshaping the economy, such as AI spending and the US-Iran war.
El-Erian noted that the balancing act would be 'difficult to strike' and 'almost certain to leave some unsatisfied,' with policy issues outside the Fed's direct mandate complicating the challenge. The keynote speech is 'bound to tell us a lot about the new Chair,' El-Erian wrote.
