Warsh's Jackson Hole Speech May Determine Treasury Yield Fate
A surge in long-term US Treasury yields has put Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's upcoming speech at the center of the bond market outlook.
Bloomberg reported on August 23 that the 30-year Treasury yield recently climbed as high as its highest level since 2007, with selling centered on long-dated bonds due to inflation remaining above the Fed's 2% target and fiscal concerns mounting.
The US national debt has exceeded $40 trillion, adding to investors' worries. Yields briefly fell after the Treasury Department announced it would at least double the size of its long-term bond buybacks, but this relief was short-lived.
With inflation and fiscal concerns still unresolved, markets are now focused on Warsh's message at the Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium on August 28. Investors will be watching for how Warsh responds to persistent inflation and whether he clearly outlines the future path of monetary policy.
