Warsh's Jackson Hole Speech Triggers NASDAQ Selloff

Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh's speech at Jackson Hole caused a divergence in market reactions. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell only nine points, while the E-mini NASDAQ-100 futures contract plummeted by 195.25 points or 0.66 percent.

The sharp decline in /NQ was due to its long-duration assets pricing valuations on cash flows projected years into the future. A rate hike compresses the present value of those forecasted earnings, affecting AI chipmakers and cloud platforms like Nvidia Corporation (NVDA) more than industrials or pharmaceuticals.

Warsh described inflation as 'still too high' and noted that over half of personal consumption expenditure components were running at 3 percent or more annually. He stated the Fed's 2 percent target is firm, but provided no forward guidance on a rate hike.

The probability of a rate hike at the Federal Open Market Committee's September 15-16 meeting jumped to roughly 57 percent after Warsh's speech, up from approximately 33 percent before it. The two-year Treasury yield climbed 12 basis points to 4.356 percent.
