Warsh's New Fed Strategy Fuels Treasury Yield Surge

Kevin Warsh's leadership at the Federal Reserve has brought about a change in how the central bank communicates its intentions to the markets. Since he took over as Fed chair in 2026, the Fed has provided fewer hints about where interest rates are headed.

The annual Jackson Hole conference is coming up in late August, and bond investors are watching whether this quieter approach is helping push long-term Treasury yields higher. According to Reuters, Warsh wants to wean markets off their reliance on explicit clues about the future path of rates, known as 'forward guidance.'

This shift has made it harder for investors to predict what will happen next. With fewer official signposts, the range of plausible outcomes is wider, and investors demand extra yield for holding long-dated bonds. This is reflected in the recent increase in long-term Treasury yields: the 30-year Treasury yield recently hit its highest level in 19 years, and the 10-year reached a 20-month high.

For mortgage borrowers, this means that rates can climb even if the Fed doesn't hike interest rates. Deutsche Bank's Steven Zeng told Reuters that reduced visibility can keep yields 'likely higher' during the handover. The practical takeaway is that long-term borrowing costs can stay elevated and may swing more around big economic prints like Wednesday's inflation data.
