Warsh's Rate Decision Leaves Market Guessing Amid Hike Odds
The upcoming Federal Reserve decision is shrouded in uncertainty, leaving investors and economists guessing. Fed chair Kevin Warsh has indicated he's willing to make unexpected decisions without warning the market beforehand, leading some to believe an interest-rate hike could be imminent.
Despite this, the odds of a hike remain low, with Fed Funds futures tracked by the CME Group placing them at around 35%, up from 26% a week ago. Options flows in the iShares 20+ year Treasury Bond ETF (TLT) and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) also suggest that investors are bracing for a possible hike.
The ratio of put open interest to calls has been steadily decreasing, with TLT prices down and the 10-year yield testing multi-year highs. Traders have bought 171,000 TLT calls compared to under 63,000 puts in Tuesday's session, while selling about 91,000 calls.
Zed Francis, co-founder and CIO of Chicago-based Convexitas, believes a surprise interest-rate hike would send yields lower, which is corroborated by past Fed actions. He notes that if the long end rallies, it could be a sign of Fed independence.
