Warsh's Secret Talks with Trump Spark Controversy Over Fed Independence
Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh has come under scrutiny for his private conversations with President Donald Trump, which were not recorded or disclosed to the public. Four Democratic senators have demanded that Warsh publicly disclose the substance of these conversations, citing concerns over the White House's potential influence on monetary policy.
The controversy centers around informal talks between a president and a Fed chair, which are rare in recent decades. In the past, communication between the two was mainly through the treasury secretary. Jerome Powell, Warsh's predecessor, recorded his calls with Trump down to the minute and immediately disclosed three meetings he held with the president.
Warsh has been criticized for being sparing in his communication with markets, which some analysts attribute to concerns that his limited disclosure has weakened confidence in the Fed's ability to respond to inflation. The private contact between Trump and Warsh has also drawn criticism from Democrats, who argue that it risks creating a perception of White House influence over monetary policy.
Trump has denied reports of pressure on the Fed chair, stating that he wants Warsh to be 'totally independent' in setting interest rates.
