Warsh's Silence Fuels Market Uncertainty Ahead of Jackson Hole
US financial markets are cautiously awaiting guidance from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh on how to control inflation at the annual economic symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
Fed Chair Warsh has made it clear he will provide fewer clues about the Fed's intentions than investors and economists would like. At his last press conference, he avoided direct answers on whether the Fed would raise its benchmark interest rate if inflation remained above target.
Despite this reluctance to commit, futures for the S&P 500 declined slightly, while those for the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.1% and Nasdaq futures fell 0.3%. The uncertainty surrounding oil prices due to the ongoing war in Iran also contributed to market jitters.
The price of Brent crude, the international standard, increased by 0.2% to $88.68 per barrel. However, U.S. benchmark crude oil dropped 0.1% to $83.46 per barrel.
