Warsh's Silence Sparks Rate Hike Odds Surge Past 55%

Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh recently delivered a keynote address that offered no forward guidance, prompting a sharp reaction in the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) futures market. Despite his deliberate silence on interest rates, the odds of a quarter-point rate increase jumped above 55% on Friday, up from 35.4% the prior day.

The speech framed what followed as a 'route map rather than forward guidance,' a practice Warsh described as having outstayed its welcome in modern central banking. He noted that the economy is resilient and the labor market broadly consistent with full employment, but expressed reservations about summer CPI and PCE readings.

Warsh stated that 'the Committee has work to do' if conditions do not change, a line that offered tone without threshold and gave traders little to anchor a position around heading into September. The address contained no mention of the upcoming Treasury operation set to double the ceiling on longer-dated buybacks from September 9.
