Warsh's Tight-Lipped Approach Tests Markets Ahead of Fed Rate Decision

With inflation data suggesting a rate hike is imminent, investors are looking to Fed Chair Kevin Warsh for guidance on the central bank's next move. However, Warsh has rejected 'forward guidance', preferring a more tight-lipped approach in his press conferences.

Last week's hot inflation data showed price pressures remain elevated, with the Consumer Price Index rising 3.4% annually in August. The core measure of inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, rose 2.4%. These numbers indicate that the Personal Consumption Expenditures Index report, due later this month, will also be high.

As a result, markets have responded aggressively to the data, with bond futures now seeing an 88% chance of a rate hike this week. This would bring the federal-funds rate target to a range between 3.75% and 4.00%. Despite this evidence, Warsh's approach remains uncertain.

Warsh has emphasized that inflation is too high and has been so for over five years. However, the drivers of inflation are complex, with various factors contributing to upward pressure on prices, including war, tariffs, immigration, and the impact of artificial intelligence. The Fed may not have a direct solution to mitigate these pressures.

Analysts believe that even if the Fed hikes this week, it does not necessarily signal the beginning of a new cycle for the central bank. Future inflation data may be softer, while volatile oil prices due to the war in Iran add uncertainty to the picture.
