Warsh's Warning Sends UK Yields Above 5% Amid Inflation Concerns
UK gilt yields have held steady above 5% as investors weigh the implications of Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's recent remarks. In his first major speech since becoming chair in May, Warsh emphasized that inflation has not meaningfully slowed down and that policymakers need clearer evidence of easing underlying price pressures.
Warsh's comments have been seen as a hawkish signal from the Fed, which may lead to tighter monetary policy in the UK. This is despite lower Brent crude prices, which have eased concerns about inflation and pushed expectations for the next Bank of England rate hike into 2027 from late 2026.
Market data shows that investors are pricing around 24 basis points of BoE tightening by December and 36 basis points by February 2027. Meanwhile, UK inflation rose to 2.9% in July, driven by higher household energy bills, and is expected to climb further toward year-end.
