Weaker Dollar Lifts Mining Shares in Europe
European stocks experienced a moderate increase on Tuesday, driven by gains in mining shares. The STOXX 600 index added 0.2% to reach 659.30, with basic resources climbing 1.4%. Miners such as Antofagasta, Hochschild Mining, and Glencore led the charge, rising 2.2-2.7% due to a weaker dollar, which typically lifts dollar-priced metals like gold.
The decline in the US dollar was sparked by softer US data, making a near-term Federal Reserve rate hike less likely. As a result, technology stocks also gained 1.1%, as lower interest rates tend to benefit 'long-duration' growth stocks with future-oriented profits.
However, not all sectors fared equally well, with energy rising 0.3% and crude prices stabilizing. Meanwhile, food and beverages fell 0.7%, highlighting that even on a calm index day, sector movements can be driven by specific price swings rather than broad market optimism.
