Week Ahead: Key Economic Indicators and Central Bank Decisions Set to Influence Monetary Policy
The upcoming week is set to be crucial for investors as it will bring key economic indicators and central bank decisions that could influence monetary policy. The highlight of the week will be the U.S. August nonfarm payrolls report on Friday, which is expected to show a rebound in job growth after contracting by 23,000 in July.
Deutsche Bank economists project headline nonfarm payrolls to rebound by 65,000, while Wells Fargo anticipates a gain of 80,000. The U.S. unemployment rate is expected to hold relatively steady at 4.1% or edge up slightly to 4.2%. Meanwhile, average hourly earnings are forecast to rebound to a monthly pace of 0.3% to 0.4%, preserving an annual nominal income expansion of around 4%.
Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's hawkish signal at the Jackson Hole symposium suggests that price pressures remain the central bank's primary concern, setting the stage for potential interest rate hikes in September. The Bank of Canada will also announce its latest monetary policy decision on Wednesday, with consensus expecting the policy rate to remain unchanged at 2.25%.
Additionally, key inflation data releases are expected from the Eurozone and India, which could influence central bank decisions. The Eurozone CPI is forecast to accelerate to an annual rate of 3.3% to 3.4%, while India's quarterly GDP growth is projected to moderate to an annual rate of 7.3% to 7.5% for Q2.
