Week in Review: U.S. Equities Plummet Amid Escalating Tensions

U.S. equities began the week on an upbeat note, driven by technology and semiconductor stocks, as investors largely shrugged off escalating Middle East tensions and fresh tariff announcements.

However, sentiment took a turn for the worse midweek as intensifying U.S.-Iran hostilities pushed oil prices sharply higher, reviving concerns about inflation and interest rates. The lower-than-expected jobless claims data further exacerbated these worries by underscoring labor market resilience and reducing pressure on the Federal Reserve to ease policy.

Lower technology shares suffered as a result of this shift in sentiment, while investors remained cautious due to ongoing uncertainty surrounding trade policy, inflation, and geopolitical developments. Meanwhile, in Canada, equities were supported early in the week by softer-than-expected June CPI data, which eased concerns about domestic inflation pressures and prompted a modest pullback in expectations for further Bank of Canada tightening.

European equities outperformed their North American counterparts as investors welcomed the European Central Bank's decision to leave rates unchanged and digested U.K. inflation and employment data that supported a cautious policy outlook.
