Weidel Demands German Exit from Euro and Schengen Ahead of State Elections

Alice Weidel, co-leader of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, has called for Germany to exit the euro currency and the Schengen Area. Speaking in a summer interview with broadcaster ZDF, Weidel argued that the introduction of the euro had eroded household wealth and weakened the national economy.

'Germany was significantly better off before the introduction of the euro,' Weidel said, emphasizing the need for Germany to regain control over its economic policies.

Weidel also pledged to seal German borders, halt naturalizations, and deport Syrians whose protection status has lapsed. She cited polling data from Forschungsgruppe Wahlen that places the AfD at 40 percent in Saxony-Anhalt ahead of September 6 contests.
