Weiss Ratings Sounds Alarm on Inflation Measurement and Portfolio Protection
U.S. investors are reassessing their portfolios as concerns over inflation measurement resurface. Weiss Ratings argues that recent and historical changes to inflation calculations can mask persistent price increases and impact how households protect their assets.
Weiss Ratings points out that the upcoming Bureau of Economic Analysis revisions may lower core PCE inflation for May from 3.4% to as low as 3.1%. The methodology behind inflation metrics, including geometric mean weighting and Owners' Equivalent Rent, may understate actual price pressures according to Weiss Ratings.
Weiss Ratings recommends that investors diversify with dividend stocks, precious metals, real estate, and income-focused strategies linked to energy, metals, and fertilizer markets amid persistent inflation. The commentary criticizes geometric mean weighting in CPI calculations, which can reduce measured inflation even when households are being forced to accept a lower standard of consumption.
Against this backdrop, Weiss Ratings advises investors to rely on direct experience of rising costs rather than official data alone when assessing inflation risk. Inflation remains above the Federal Reserve's target for more than five years, and higher crude oil prices threaten to feed through to fuel, fertilizers, and broader living costs.
