Wells Fargo Unveils Tokenized Deposits for Corporate Clients
Wells Fargo is set to introduce tokenized deposits for its corporate and commercial clients later this year. The initial service will focus on 24/7 USD-GBP settlements, allowing eligible customers to move, program, and settle funds around the clock, including weekends and public holidays.
The bank's system will automatically determine whether an eligible payment should use conventional bank rails or tokenized deposits based on which option offers better speed or flexibility. Customers will continue interacting with Wells Fargo through their usual banking channels while the blockchain infrastructure operates behind the scenes.
This approach could make it easier for corporate treasury teams to use the technology, as they won't need to manage cryptocurrency wallets or directly interact with blockchain networks. The tokenized deposits are digital representations of conventional commercial bank deposits recorded on a blockchain and remain liabilities of the issuing bank rather than privately issued digital assets.
The rollout will initially be too small to materially change Wells Fargo's deposit base or payment revenue, but its importance lies in whether the bank can expand the service across currencies and jurisdictions while keeping it compatible with other financial networks. Tokenized deposits could become a direct banking alternative to stablecoins for large companies if the system moves beyond internal or limited bilateral transfers.
