White House Threatens to Fire Fed Governor Cook Over Mortgage Allegations

The White House has again threatened to fire Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook over allegations of making false statements on her mortgage applications. The Aug. 5 letter from the White House directs Cook to respond in writing by Aug. 26, or risk being removed from her position.

Cook has been challenging these allegations since 2025, when Trump first attempted to fire her. She was allowed to stay in her position while lower courts addressed the case, as per a Supreme Court ruling in June.

The White House's latest letter references an attached criminal referral and claims that Cook improperly wrote on mortgage applications that two different properties were her primary residence to pay lower interest rates.
