Winston Peters Warns of Economic Storm and Calls for Rational Immigration Reform
New Zealand is facing significant economic and immigration challenges, according to Winston Peters. Speaking at an event, Peters emphasized the need for 'cool heads' and 'rational judgement' in addressing these issues.
Peters acknowledged that the economy is not where it should be, with many Kiwis struggling to make ends meet. He stated that New Zealand First has consistently warned about the need for time to turn the economy around, as opposed to other parties' promises of rapid fixes within three years.
Peters highlighted several key issues, including inflation and interest rates rising, despite being lower than under the previous Labour government. He also pointed to the impact of global events, such as the Middle East conflict, which has worsened the economic outlook.
Peters criticized the previous Labour government for massive overborrowing and spending on consumption rather than production, employment, or exports. He noted that a recent COVID inquiry revealed that $30 billion of borrowed funds were not spent on COVID-related expenses, but instead on other purposes.
New Zealand First has proposed sweeping changes to current immigration laws, including smart policies focused on highly skilled critical workforce needs and providing real reasons for Kiwis to stay in New Zealand. Peters emphasized the need for a system that prioritizes the needs of employers, industry, and Kiwi workers, rather than relying on cheap labor.
