Wise Takes Aim at Travelex Money Card with Transparent Exchange Rates
The Travelex Money Card and Wise are two popular travel money card options that cater to different types of travelers. The Travelex Money Card is a prepaid Mastercard that allows users to load specific foreign currencies before traveling, while Wise is a multi-currency debit card tied to a borderless account.
One key difference between the two cards lies in their exchange rate and fee structures. Travelex uses its own retail exchange rates when loading or reloading funds, which are often less favorable than the mid-market rate due to a built-in markup. In contrast, Wise converts at the real mid-market rate with a small transparent conversion fee added on top.
For example, if a US traveler loads $2,000 onto a Travelex Money Card and exchanges it for euros, they may get around 1,740 euros instead of approximately 1,840 euros if converted at the true mid-market rate. With Wise, the same traveler could convert their funds to euros in the app at the mid-market rate with a fee of under 1 percent, resulting in around 1,820 euros.
While Travelex Money Card may be suitable for occasional travelers who value convenience and fixed rates, Wise is geared towards frequent travelers and digital nomads who require flexibility and better exchange rates. The choice between the two cards ultimately depends on individual preferences and needs.
