Won/Dollar Exchange Rate Hits 14-Month Low Amid Yen Strength
The won/dollar exchange rate has fallen to its lowest point in over a year, trading as low as 1,349.5 won intraday on August 4. This marks the first time since July 2022 that the exchange rate has entered the 1,340 won range. The decline was triggered by a combination of factors, including a sharp rally in the Japanese yen amid speculation about potential intervention by Japanese authorities.
The yen/dollar exchange rate fell to its lowest point in three weeks, dropping from around 158 yen to 156.185 yen. This downward trend has had a knock-on effect on the won, which is highly correlated with the yen. The decline was also influenced by dovish comments from Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller and a weaker-than-expected ADP private employment report.
South Korean exporters have continued to sell dollars, adding to the downward pressure on the exchange rate. However, foreign investors have been net buyers of South Korean stocks for two consecutive sessions, which has helped limit the pace of decline.
