Won-Yen Exchange Rate Hits 19-Month High as Demand for Japanese Travel Surges
The won-yen exchange rate has fallen to around 800 won per 100 yen, marking its highest level in 19 months. The demand for travel to Japan during the summer vacation season and the use of 'currency technology' to buy yen at a low price have increased simultaneously.
According to financial sector data from August 1-27, the five major banks (KB Kookmin, Shinhan, Hana, Woori, and NH Nonghyup Bank) exchanged around 31.5 billion yen, which is worth approximately 281.4 billion won at the current exchange rate of 893.38 won per 100 yen.
This represents a 7.8 billion yen increase from the previous month's exchange amount and marks the highest level since December 2024 (32.2 billion yen).
An official from a commercial bank stated that the strong dollar and rising oil prices caused by the Middle East crisis have led to decreased demand for overseas travel outside Japan.
