XIU: Energy and Banks Drive Canada's Blue-Chip Giants in September
The iShares S&P/TSX 60 index ETF (TSX:XIU) is a bellwether for Canada's corporate health, tracking the performance of the country's 60 largest and most established companies. As one of the oldest and most heavily traded exchange-traded funds in the country, XIU is closely watched by investors and analysts.
With assets around $24 billion and deep daily liquidity, XIU offers a concentrated stake in Canada's corporate elite. The fund replicates the S&P/TSX 60 Index, which includes financials, energy, materials, industrials, and communications companies. Its management expense ratio is roughly 0.18%, higher than the broad-market XIC but providing a more focused large-cap exposure.
The fund's performance in September will be driven by energy producers benefiting from a crude-price spike and banks navigating a shifting rate environment after the Bank of Canada's latest hold. Financials dominate the sector mix, followed by energy, giving XIU a distinctly cyclical, income-oriented character.
Investors may watch key signposts such as oil prices, further bank commentary on credit and margins, and the Bank of Canada's late-October decision. Risks include commodity-price swings, concentration in financials and energy, interest-rate sensitivity across banks and pipelines, and trade friction to dampen the broader economy.
