Yen Bounces on Hawkish BoJ Repricing
The Japanese Yen (JPY) experienced significant fluctuations in value as speculation about intervention and the Bank of Japan's (BoJ) policy decision weighed on the market. The USD/JPY pair briefly dropped to 158.00 on suspected intervention before rebounding to near 161.00, only to drop again.
The BoJ kept its policy rate at 1.00% with a hawkish bias and upgraded its risk assessment, while swaps now price higher odds of a September BoJ hike, supporting the Japanese Yen (JPY) outlook.
Hawkish BoJ repricing favors the Yen, according to analysts, as the bank continues to tighten monetary policy despite only 50bps of tightening since December 2025. The swaps curve has already increased the implied odds of a September BoJ hike to roughly 40% from 20%.
