Yen Breaks Through 154 Threshold to Reach Six-Month High on Rate Hike Expectations
The Japanese yen has surged more than 2% against the US dollar, breaking through the 154-yen-per-dollar threshold to reach a six-month high. This dramatic increase in value was driven by rising expectations for accelerated rate hikes by the Bank of Japan and aggressive short-covering by speculators.
Market participants noted that the yen's upward momentum accelerated notably on the afternoon of the 7th, gaining nearly ¥2 (approximately $0.013) in a short span to touch the low-154 range. This marks the yen's strongest rally since late July, when coordinated intervention by US and Japanese authorities pulled the currency back from a swing low of 160.39.
The market's repricing of the Bank of Japan's monetary policy trajectory is the core driver behind the yen's strength. Traders are increasingly betting that the BOJ will accelerate its rate-hike pace, with some investors now focusing on the September 18 rate decision to see whether a rate hike passes by a unanimous 9-0 vote, and whether Governor Kazuo Ueda maintains the possibility of another hike in October.
