Yen Carry Trade Worries: Investors Warned of Potential Market Volatility
Investors in the cryptocurrency market need to closely follow not only the Fed's policies but also interest rate and yen movements in Japan. The 'yen carry trade' has been a significant factor in global markets, driving up prices of risky assets such as stocks, bonds, and cryptocurrencies. This strategy involves borrowing yen at low interest rates, converting them into other currencies like the dollar, and then investing in assets with higher return potential.
EasyA co-founder Dom Kwok notes that Japan's interest rates have remained near zero or even negative for many years, creating a significant source of cheap liquidity for global investors. This has facilitated a significant influx of capital into global markets while driving up the prices of risky assets.
Kwok warns that a strengthening yen and rising interest rates in Japan can reduce the profitability of carry trades. In such a scenario, investors may need to reduce their positions to pay off their yen-denominated debt, creating strong selling pressure on Bitcoin and altcoins. The events of August 2024 are cited as an example, where the Bank of Japan raised its interest rate to 0.25%, leading to a rapid appreciation of the yen, unwinding of carry trade positions, and increased volatility in global markets.
