Yen Fades Fast as Intervention's Boost Wears Off
The Japanese yen has been underperforming its Group-of-10 peers in August, reversing part of its gains from July. After strengthening by 3.2% against the dollar in July, the yen has weakened by about 0.5% so far this month. The currency briefly rallied after a softer-than-expected US payrolls report on Friday put pressure on the greenback, but soon resumed its decline.
The yen's underperformance is causing traders to be vigilant for further official intervention in the foreign exchange market. Japan's recent interventions have been losing their boost, which may indicate that more action is needed to support the currency.
