Yen Falters Under Pressure from Weak Fundamentals
The Japanese yen has struggled to maintain its gains following the joint intervention by Tokyo and Washington nearly a month ago. Despite this, persistent structural weaknesses continue to weigh on the currency.
One of the main concerns is the wide interest rate gap between Japan and other major economies. This disparity prompts investors to borrow at low rates in the yen and seek higher returns in overseas assets.
Rising fiscal concerns in Japan, coupled with elevated oil prices linked to the Middle East conflict, have further reinforced the bearish outlook for the yen.
The Bank of Japan is increasingly expected to raise interest rates in September amid concerns over currency weakness and import-driven inflation. This move could potentially alleviate some pressure on the yen, but its impact remains uncertain.
