Yen Gains as Rate Hike Expectations Spark Rally
The Japanese yen saw a sharp gain against the US dollar on Wednesday, rising to 158.67 per dollar after having retraced about half of its increases following a joint intervention by the US and Japan in late July.
This move was not immediately attributed to any particular cause, but some analysts suggest it may be related to interest rate hikes in Japan, with BOJ Governor Kazuo Ueda signaling a strong chance of a hike this month.
The yen had reached a 40-year low of 163.98 per dollar before the intervention and rose to as high as 155.21 afterwards before surrendering some gains.
Hawkish comments from BOJ board member Hajime Takata, who said interest rate hikes should be conducted nimbly to counter inflationary pressures, may also have contributed to the yen's rise.
