Yen Gains Erode as Market Awaits Next Move from US and Japan
The Japanese yen has stabilized against the US dollar after last week's rare joint intervention by the US and Japan, but its gains are short-lived. The currency pair is currently trading around 159.28, still above the three-month high of 155.20 reached last week.
According to Bannockburn Capital Markets' Chief Market Strategist, the market is testing the resolve of US and Japanese officials. The intervention briefly strengthened the yen, but nearly half of those gains have already been erased.
Speculators sharply reduced their net short yen positions by $8.865 billion to $3.604 billion, the largest cut in over 12 years, as of the week ending August 4. However, analysts believe that speculators may take this opportunity to re-establish short positions.
