Yen Hits Four-Week High as Hawkish BoJ Comments Boost Rate Hike Bets
The Japanese yen has reached a four-week high against major and minor currencies after hawkish comments from Bank of Japan officials boosted expectations for an interest rate hike in September.
Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda said that the central bank would discuss raising interest rates, including at its September meeting, with a focus on whether inflation risks are increasing. Board member Hajime Takata also emphasized the need for flexible monetary policy to counter mounting inflationary pressures.
The US dollar fell 0.7% against the yen to ¥157.55, its lowest level since August 7, as investors await further data on developments in Japan's economy.
Market pricing indicates a near certainty of a 25-basis-point interest rate hike by the Bank of Japan at its September meeting, with expectations of inflation, unemployment, and wages data to reassess those probabilities.
