Yen Hits Fresh 40-Year Low Amid US-Iran Tensions and Fiscal Policy Concerns
The Japanese yen has hit its lowest point in over 40 years, trading at an all-time high of 163.81 against the US dollar on Friday. Despite repeated warnings from officials about possible currency intervention, the yen continues to decline.
Japanese Finance Minister's statement that authorities are ready to take decisive action seems to have had little impact on market sentiment. The Bank of Japan may allow a faster pace of rate hikes than markets currently expect, but this has not provided any significant support for the yen.
Additonal pressure on the yen comes from concerns over Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's fiscal policy and the escalating US, Iran conflict. Japan is heavily dependent on energy imports, making its economy particularly vulnerable to rising oil prices.
