Yen Hits Historic Low of ¥163 Amid Concerns Over Japan's Structural Economic Challenges

The Japanese yen has reached a historic low of ¥163 per dollar, its lowest point in approximately 39 years and 7 months. This unprecedented weakness has sparked both concern and opportunity among investors.

Experts point to three primary factors contributing to the yen's depreciation: the government's 'Honebuto Plan 2026,' escalating tensions in the Middle East, and Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's hawkish stance on inflation control.

However, Yukio Noguchi, professor emeritus at Hitotsubashi University, warns that the yen's weakness is more than a transient phenomenon. He attributes the prolonged decline to Japan's sluggish potential growth rate, productivity issues, and structural economic challenges, such as a 'digital deficit' and massive capital outflows.

Noguchi emphasizes the need for Japan to boost productivity, cultivate competitive companies and industries, and raise real wages to alter the yen's long-term selling trend. In contrast, Choi Hye-sook, a private banker at Hana Bank's Gold Club Seoapgujeong branch, sees the current yen level as 'extremely undervalued' but cautions against short-term currency gains.

Choi recommends investing in yen-denominated overseas ETFs and Japanese equity funds, such as the Global X 25+ Year T-Bond ETF or the Fidelity Japan Equity ESG Fund. She also advises against lump-sum investing and instead advocates for 'dollar-cost averaging.'
