Yen Hits Near 40-Year Low Amid Global Geopolitical Tensions
The Japanese yen has fallen to near a 40-year low against the U.S. dollar, sparking concerns about its long-term viability as a safe-haven asset.
Market analysts point to structural problems in Japan's economy, including wide interest rate differentials between the United States and Japan, compounded by geopolitical tensions pushing the U.S. dollar higher.
These underlying issues have eroded the yen's fundamentals, making it difficult for the Japanese government to reverse its medium- to long-term depreciation trend through short-term intervention.
Akira Nakaminato, a visiting professor at Japan's Tama University, notes that Japan's heavy reliance on energy imports has amplified the negative economic impact of the Middle East conflict on the country, outweighing the yen's traditional appeal as a safe-haven asset.
