Yen Intervention Rally Losing Steam Amid Interest Rate Concerns
The Japanese yen's recent intervention-fueled rally is losing steam as market participants question the sustainability of government support and the Bank of Japan's policy path.
In October 2024, Japanese authorities spent over ¥5.8 trillion (approximately $38 billion) in a series of interventions to support the yen, marking the first such action since 2022.
The intervention pushed the USD/JPY pair from above 160 to around 151 within weeks, but as of early December 2024, the yen has given back a significant portion of those gains, trading near 155.
The fundamental driver remains the wide gap between U.S. and Japanese interest rates, with the Federal Reserve cutting rates slower than expected and the Bank of Japan signaling a cautious approach to further hikes.
