Yen Jumps Past 158 Against Dollar Amid Speculation of Central Bank Intervention
The Japanese yen made a surprise move on July 30, jumping past JPY158 against the US dollar in Tokyo late in the day. This unexpected appreciation came after the yen had fallen to its weakest level against the dollar in around 40 years, sparking concerns that Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's expansionary fiscal policy would worsen Japan's public finances.
The yen's brief surge was met with speculation that Japanese authorities may have intervened to support the currency. Market participants suggested that the government might have seen an opportunity to intervene after the US Federal Reserve left interest rates unchanged, leading to dollar selling in the markets.
Some analysts pointed out that the Japanese government had last intervened in the foreign exchange market between April and May, selling US dollars and buying yen. However, by 5pm local time, the yen was trading back at JPY163.73-74 against the US dollar.
